|
Letter to the Editor: |
By writing a letter to the editor of a fictional paper, students familiarize themselves with factors that contributed to the relocation of South Carolina’s capital city from Charleston to Columbia in 1786. |
Council Meeting: |
This activity provides students with an opportunity to examine, research, and debate sensitive issues surrounding the impact of development on the riverfront environment. |
Sedimentation: |
The Three Rivers and Estuary modules of RiverVenture look at the impact of development along rivers. The following activity looks at how new development can increase erosion, and ultimately, sedimentation in rivers (i.e. “Canal Side” - Three Rivers). |
Effects of Pollutants: |
The Three Rivers and Estuary modules of RiverVenture remind us that we all live in a watershed, and upstream from someone else. The following activity simulates how runoff pollution created by communities can contaminate rivers and creeks. |
Observe Your Wasteland: |
We are all an integral part of larger ecosystems. Students need to get a sense of
their interaction with immediate and larger scale environments around them.
They need to realize that our local mountains and foothills affect sloughs and the
ocean, and that the ocean affects the mountains, land, and sloughs. |
At the Speed of Muck: |
Understand the lack of realistic barriers between air, water and the soil in the
local and global environment. |
|
Using maps while following the watershed can help students realize our own
place in the bigger ecosystem.. |
